You're probably wondering what the heck the title of today's blog post means. Well. This past Wednesday, I had a few friends over for pizza and girl time. After they left, I did some dishes and started to get ready for bed. Every now and then, I'd hear a faint "chirp, chirp" but didn't think anything of it. There is a birds nest in the roof above my apartment, and I have gotten used to hearing some rustling every now and then. But, as I climbed into bed and tried to finish up some homework, the chirping became louder. Anytime I'd make a noise, the chirp would quickly follow.
That's when I realized... The chirping was coming from the chimney.
As you can tell, there is a type of "plug" on my chimney. And it can be assumed that since the owner plugged the bottom of the chimney, the top of the chimney would be covered as well. I found out later that no, the owner has not covered the chimney (fabulous), but anyway. I assumed that a chick had fallen from it's nest and into the chimney. I sat in bed for a little bit, just kinda listening to the bird crying for help. Finally I investigated the plug and found that it is actually just a piece of metal that is easily removable. So, I grabbed a screw driver and got to work. My heart beat quickened as it came out, because I was terrified that the chick would burst out from the chimney, and all these bugs would come out with it... Eek!
Well, once I got the metal part away, the little chick started chirping its head off. Unfortunately, the little chick wasn't fully developed. And it wasn't alone. There were 3 other baby chicks with it, all pink and sad. I didn't know what to do. There was no way I could take care of them. It looked like the eggs had broken in the fall, and the chicks were just barely developed enough to breathe and chirp. Some of them didn't have both legs, or wings, and they couldn't see anything but lights and shadows (their eyelids hadn't split). I don't know anything about baby birds, but I knew that at 2 am, I wouldn't be able to find anyone who did either. So, I gently scooped them and the remnants of their nest out from the chimney (there were some baby chicks that had already died, and what looked like the bodies of other chicks that had fallen in and died a while ago) and put them into a box. I brought the box outside and set it by the house. There were not any trees or bushes around that I could put it in.
The next morning I went out and checked on it. Two of the chicks were gone and the other two were dead. I cried for a little bit and called my landlord. He said he will get the chimney covered soon.
On a lighter note, I do not have to work this week! The studio is closed in observance of July 4th, so that leaves me a completely free (and broke) lady!
Since I only have a few dollars to my name right now, I'm trying to occupy myself with some crafts that do not require money.
Projects that I already have the stuff for:
-Shelves for living room and bedroom (2)
-Sink skirt (3)
-Suitcase bed for Cleo (4)
-Suitcase table (5)
-Fabric headboard (1)
*numbered in order of excitement!!*
I am SO excited about the fabric headboard and the shelves! I am about to get started on the shelves now. I shall take pictures and keep you all posted. :)
Love!
